I decided that I wanted to build at least one example of every car number to race in NASCAR. From 1972 to today, that's 110 numbers, 00-09, then 0-99. Pre-72 triple digit numbers were allowed, and one car even ran as #7777. So, there's a lot to choose from. I decided early on that I only wanted to do Cup cars, which is anything from Strictly Stock, Grand National, Winston Cup, Nextel Cup series. Since I began the project, it's also become Sprint Cup and Monster Energy Cup, which are also now part of the project. I would not include Busch, Trucks, or any other NASCAR division in the scope of the project, I only wanted Cup. Since my building has decreased from a peak of 60 completed models in one year to an average of 1 per year. I've been rethinking that self-imposed restriction, especially as though all 110 numbers have run in Cup, several do not have any decals made, however that still stands, for now.
At the time of my modeling renaissance in 2018, I have completed exactly 100 NASCAR models. While I don't intend to ever stop building, currently, with 10 less than the total possible numbers currently used, I know this project is likely to take years...decades, even, and I'm ok with that. The good thing is, because all NASCAR cars have numbers, literally every build I ever undertake will qualify for the project..as long as it's a Cup car. Of the 100 I've built, 10 have been Busch cars, 3 have been trucks, and 1 was built as a car being constructed, so no number. Of the 86 qualifying builds, there are 48 different numbers built, which is really pretty cool because I have not really built any specifically for the project- all are cars I was going to build anyway, which is why the number is not closer to completion. Of all the car numbers, I've built more #3 cars than any other number, with 7 builds.
Now, after quite a bit of preface, here is what I've done, with the best build quality car being the one shown for numbers with more than one build:

2005 Carl Edwards Stonebridge Life. I won my first ever award with this car. |
And that's all I've got right now. It should not be too hard to figure out that the 1990s is my favorite era in the sport- as I progress in my model building it'll be even more obvious. If you want to see more photos of any of these models, or any of the models that did not make the cut as best of the number, please visit my model photo gallery HERE.
Six of the 10 Busch cars I've built are numbers that I have not built a Cup car for yet, while none of the three trucks I've built are missing numbers from this project. I'm still debating if I should include them or not. One of the numbers- 57- is a number that I don't think any Cup decals exist for, which is the main reason I am debating including them.
It was nice to see them again. You are going to need a bigger storage unit.
